Dharmanagar, Tripura, 9th of July 2026 : Demanding the repair of the long-neglected Dharmanagar–Kadamtala road, local residents staged a road blockade at Natun Bazar on Thursday (9th July, 2026). The severely damaged road has been causing immense hardship for daily commuters, passenger vehicles, and goods carriers. Frustrated by repeated promises without any concrete action, residents launched the protest to press for immediate repairs.

The blockade resulted in heavy traffic congestion on the Dharmanagar– Kadamtala road, leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides.Upon receiving the information, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kadamtala Police Station arrived at the spot and held discussions with the protesters. However, the demonstrators alleged that the OC behaved rudely with the public during the discussions, further adding to their resentment. After a prolonged standoff, an official from the Public Works Department (PWD) reached the site and assured the protesters that repair work would begin soon. Following this assurance, the blockade was withdrawn.

Nevertheless, the residents remain skeptical, pointing out that a similar promise had been made a few months ago after another road blockade, but no meaningful work was undertaken.According to local residents, the Dharmanagar–Kadamtala road has remained in a dilapidated condition for a long time. During the monsoon, large potholes fill with water, significantly increasing the risk of accidents and causing severe inconvenience to the public. Students, office-goers, business people, and even ambulances carrying patients are facing serious difficulties because of the poor condition of the road.

Participants in the protest questioned the effectiveness of the state government’s development promises, arguing that if repeated protests and road blockades are required to demand basic road repairs, the government’s commitments are not being reflected on the ground. They also alleged that not only the Dharmanagar–Kadamtala road but several other important roads across the Dharmanagar subdivision are in a deplorable state, with little visible intervention from elected representatives. The residents further demanded greater transparency regarding government funds allocated for road repairs, asking whether such funds exist and, if so, how they are being utilized. They warned that unless permanent repair work begins immediately, they will launch a larger and more intense agitation in the coming days.
