Electricity Consumers Detain Electricity Department Employees.

Khowai, Tripura, 7th of January, 2026 : Local residents detained Electricity department employees after smart meters generated excessively high bills. According report, smart meters were installed in some houses a few days ago at the Sachindra Nagar area of North Chebri under Khowai District on Wednesday (7th January, 2025).

Smart meters were installed at the residence of power consumer Jagadish Rudra Pal. He expressed his anger, stating that despite using only two bulbs, he received a bill of ₹424 for just 15 days. When department staff arrived today to install smart meters in other houses in the area, local residents detained the employees and staged a protest, insisting that they would not allow smart meters to be installed in place of the existing meters. The residents have been protesting since morning, demanding that department officials come to the area, hold discussions with them, and remove the smart meters.
