Dharmanagar Tripura, 25th of January, 2026 : Serious allegations of negligence and disrespect towards journalists have emerged during the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Gouri Shekhar Roy Indoor Sports Hall at the BBI Complex in Dharmanagar. The important event, organized by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, formally invited journalists from Dharmanagar. However, according to the media persons present, their dignity and professional status were not upheld in practice.Arrangements had initially been made for journalists to sit on designated chairs in front of the stage. But once the programme began, journalists had to leave their seats to collect news and cover the event. Taking advantage of this, a group of self-proclaimed local leaders occupied the seats reserved for the press. As a result, after completing their coverage duties, journalists found no seating arrangements available for them. This led to strong resentment among the journalists present.

They alleged that despite being officially invited, they are repeatedly subjected to such humiliation. Not only at this event, but similar treatment has reportedly been observed at various programmes organized by the Sports Department and other government departments in Dharmanagar.Members of the press stated that the media plays a vital role as the fourth pillar of democracy. Yet, the absence of basic respect and proper arrangements for journalists at government functions is deeply disappointing. They demanded that future programmes must ensure separate and secure seating arrangements for journalists and urged the administration to treat the matter with due seriousness. The incident has triggered strong reactions within the journalistic community of Dharmanagar. Many journalists feel that if this trend of ignoring the media continues, they may be compelled to take tough decisions regarding coverage of government programmes in the future.
