Dharmanagar, Tripura, 28th of April 2026 : Expressing deep concern over the rising trend of illegal and anti-social activities in North Tripura district, a delegation of journalists submitted a deputation to the Superintendent of Police. The delegation highlighted a worrying increase in incidents such as drug trafficking, circulation of Yaba tablets, illegal sale of cough syrup, cannabis trade, gambling networks, illicit liquor production and sale, smuggling of Burmese cigarettes, and cattle trafficking across different parts of the district. On behalf of the delegation, it was stated that these unlawful activities are not only deteriorating law and order but are also severely affecting the youth and the future generation. The easy availability of narcotic substances, in particular, is pushing young people toward a dangerous path, raising serious concerns among the community.

The deputation further pointed out that several routes along the Assam and Mizoram borders are being used by organized networks to bring illegal goods into the North district. From there, the contraband is reportedly trafficked to various locations within the district and further to Unakoti and other bordering regions. Areas such as Damcherra, Panisagar, Kanchanpur, Pecharthal, Kumarghat, and Kailashahar were identified as key corridors used by these trafficking networks. The journalists also alleged that some individuals involved in these illegal activities operate under the cover of respectable professions, making it difficult for the general public to identify them. In this context, they demanded swift identification of those involved and strict legal action against them.

Additionally, the delegation urged the administration to intensify surveillance in border areas, conduct regular enforcement drives, and ensure the arrest of the key masterminds behind these trafficking networks.

Receiving the deputation, North District Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai assured the delegation that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. He stated that surveillance has already been strengthened based on available intelligence inputs, and strict action will be taken against the illegal networks very soon. He also reaffirmed the police administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of society.
