Kalachhara Sub-Seed Store Today On The Verge Of Death.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 13th of September, 2026 : Once a place that would come alive with the hustle and bustle of farmers as soon as the first light of dawn appeared, and where the air was filled with the fragrance of various crop seeds, the Kalachhara Sub-Seed Store today presents a picture of utter silence and decay. Located in the Kalachhara market area, the heart of Kalachhara Block under the Bagbassa Assembly constituency, this once-familiar seed store now stands clinging only to memories of its glorious past.

Government neglect, lack of proper maintenance, and the absence of renovation have transformed this once-trusted institution for farmers into a dying ruin.Turning the pages of history reveals that the Sub-Seed Store began its journey on September 2, 2006, with great hope under the leadership of Foyzur Rahman, the then Minister of the Labour and Minority Development Department in the Left Front government. The store was inaugurated through a grand ceremony. Its sole objective was to bring smiles to the faces of thousands of farmers in five agriculture -dependent gram panchayats of the Kalachhara region and ensure the timely supply of quality seeds. For more than a decade, the government institution genuinely served as a trusted friend of the farming community.But with the change in the political climate of the state, it seems the light went out at this seed store as well. During the tenure of the present BJP-led coalition government, the facility has not only failed to receive any renovation, but has also lost its original purpose and effectiveness.

Although it is called a “Seed Store” or seed depot, the actual storage and distribution of seeds, along with all government services related to providing seeds to farmers, have now come to a complete halt. Thousands of farmers from Kalachhara and neighbouring areas have become victims of this neglect. Apart from the occasional distribution of small quantities of chemical fertilisers, farmers receive virtually no other assistance from the facility. The entire department is now a glaring symbol of what local farmers describe as the government’s anti-farmer attitude.The ground reality is even more painful and distressing. The two main buildings have deteriorated to such an extent that rainwater pours through the damaged roofs. From a distance, the premises look like an abandoned cremation ground. Surrounded by dense bushes and a huge bamboo grove, the government complex becomes gloomy even in broad daylight. Ordinary pedestrians feel uneasy even while walking past it. An eerie, spine-chilling atmosphere hangs over the entire premises.The condition of the officers and employees of the department is equally deplorable. With rainwater leaking through the cracked roof, they have been forced to take shelter in a tiny room inside one of the buildings in an attempt to protect important official documents. But there is hardly enough space even to sit there, let alone work in a proper environment.

As a result, Government employees are compelled to spend their working days sitting helplessly on the verandah with files and official papers.Once an institution that played a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers, the Kalachhara Sub-Seed Store has now become a symbol of extreme neglect, seemingly sacrificed at the altar of political indifference.The distressed farming community of Kalachhara now has only one question: Will this dilapidated building ever come alive again? Or, after providing farmers with only the occasional trickle of fertiliser, will its doors finally be locked for good—the last remaining shelter of their hopes and aspirations?
