Sabroom, Tripura, 18th of July 2026 : Founded in 1950, Sabroom Higher Secondary School has earned a reputation for academic excellence and has produced many notable alumni serving in different sectors across Tripura. However, the institution now finds itself in urgent need of attention as deteriorating buildings and outdated facilities pose increasing safety concerns.

The school’s Golden Jubilee Hall, once a symbol of achievement, now reflects years of neglect rather than cherished memories. In several areas, chunks of plaster are falling from the ceiling, while exposed electrical wires hang dangerously overhead. The lack of proper wiring and an adequate electrical system has become a growing safety concern for students and staff alike. Many of the classrooms are decades old and in poor condition, and the school campus still lacks a complete boundary wall, adding to concerns over safety and infrastructure.
Perhaps the most alarming concern is that both teachers and students are still forced to use toilets that are nearly 40 years old. The condition of the roof has deteriorated to such an extent that there are constant fears it could collapse at any moment, putting users at serious risk. This raises a pressing question: has even the most basic assurance of safety in an educational institution become a luxury, alongside the right to quality education?

Interacting with media, the school’s Acting Headmaster, Shimul Bikash Deb, acknowledged that several buildings on the campus, particularly the Golden Jubilee Hall, are in a deteriorating condition, with plaster and portions of the ceiling falling in multiple places. He also admitted that the school’s electrical wiring and power infrastructure are outdated and pose potential safety risks. According to him, comprehensive infrastructure development of the institution has become an urgent necessity.
Some parents voiced their frustration with biting sarcasm. One remarked, “Students here have to watch not only their books but also the ceiling above their heads, fearing it might collapse.” Another commented, “The school’s history may be decades old, but so is the long list of problems with its buildings.”

The question now echoing across Sabroom is whether this 76-year-old government school will continue to survive solely on the glory of its past or finally receive the modern, safe infrastructure it deserves. Parents, alumni, and local residents have urged the authorities to take immediate action, calling for urgent administrative intervention to transform this historic institution into a safe, well-equipped, and future-ready place of learning.
