Agartala, Tripura, 30th of June, 2025 : The demand for organically grown Queen Pineapples from Tripura is steadily increasing in international markets. To meet this growing demand, the state has initiated efforts to ensure year-round pineapple cultivation, focusing particularly on staggered planting. This announcement was made by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratanlal Nath while inaugurating the 5th CII Tripura Pineapple Festival at Pragya Bhawan on June 27. The festival is organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with support from the Horticulture Department of the state government. On this occasion, exhibition stalls featuring various pineapple products from NERAMAC, FPOs, and other organizations were set up. The agriculture minister visited the stalls and interacted with farmers.

In his speech, the minister stated that currently, 58,491 hectares of land in the state are used for cultivating various fruits. Of this, over 11,000 hectares are dedicated to Kew and Queen variety pineapples. Annually, the state produces nearly 1.74 lakh metric tons of pineapple. Kew pineapples are mainly cultivated in Dhalai, North Tripura, and Unakoti districts, while Queen pineapples are mostly grown in West Tripura and Sepahijala. The minister emphasized that during the previous government’s tenure, farmers did not receive fair prices for their pineapples. The current government has ensured that farmers now get proper value for their produce. Buyer-seller conferences have been organized in Delhi, Indore, and Varanasi to promote Tripura pineapples nationwide. He further highlighted that due to the state government’s efforts, the export of Queen pineapples has significantly increased. In 2018, Queen pineapple was declared the State Fruit. From FY 2018-19 to 2024-25, over 73 metric tons of pineapple have been exported to countries like Dubai, Oman, Qatar, and Bangladesh. Additionally, 15,000 metric tons have been sent to other Indian states. The GI tag awarded to Queen pineapple has helped in better market positioning. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has also taken initiatives to make Queen pineapple a global brand. To support this, the state government is considering a 132 crore project.

The Agriculture Minister also mentioned that in the past seven years, significant progress has been made in the agriculture sector as well as in other areas of the state. The government continues to provide various forms of support to make farmers financially self-reliant and assured that the government will always stand by the farmers. Other dignitaries present at the event included Apurba Roy Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Raj Ganguly Senior Agribusiness Specialist, World Bank, Advait Kulkarni MD, Nansai Fruits and Vegetable Products Industry, and Naresh Gajbhiye, Co-founder, Grow India Import Export.
