Two Convicted In Cannabis Smuggling Case Sentenced To 5 Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment, Fined ₹25,000 Each.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 26th of August, 2026 : A court has sentenced two accused in a cannabis smuggling case to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined them ₹25,000 each. The convicts have been identified as Joyhari Lal Chakma, a resident of Damcherra, and Bikash Chakma of Talukdarpara in Pecharthal.

Government advocate Dhruva Goswami said that on the evening of March 23, 2022, police intercepted an Alto car during routine checking at the Rishipara naka point on the Damcherra-Khedachhara road. During the search, around 15 bundles of cannabis were recovered from the rear boot of the vehicle.A case was subsequently registered at Damcherra Police Station and was later tried before the Special Court under NDPS Case No. 40/2022.
After recording the statements of a total of eight witnesses, the court sentenced both accused to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000 each.

The North Tripura District Police praised the professionalism and thorough investigation of the investigating officer, Inspector Lazarus Lalmodika Darlong. At the time of the investigation, he was serving as an SI (UB) at Damcherra Police Station. He is currently posted with the Unakoti District Police.The police administration has stated that it will continue to take stringent measures to curb drug trafficking and ensure that those involved in such offences are brought to justice.
