Dharmanagar, Tripura, 12th of August, 2026 : Ahead of the upcoming 80th Independence Day, members of the self-help group (SHG) ‘Udyog’ in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, are busy making national flags. The members are participating in the Independence Day preparations by producing the national flag through their own initiative. Established around five years ago, ‘Udyog’ SHG has a total of 13 members. Apart from tailoring, the members are engaged in various activities, including candle making, food supply and the production of coloured powder.
However, tailoring remains one of their main sources of employment.This year, ahead of Independence Day, ‘Udyog’ SHG has received an order for around 500 national flags. To complete the order, the members are working intensively on flag production. SHG members including Suma Rani Das, Monika Sutradhar, Happy Dhar and Jhuma Acharya, along with all 13 members, are skilled in tailoring.However, due to financial constraints, not every member owns a sewing machine. At present, only two members have their own sewing machines. The members are taking turns using these two machines to continue making the flags.
The SHG members said that although they received a Government order last year, they have not received any government order so far this year. They appealed to the administration and government to provide additional sewing machines and regular government orders so that they can produce a larger number of national flags.According to the members, such support would not only increase opportunities for locally produced national flags but also boost the income and employment opportunities of SHG members.
The members of ‘Udyog’ SHG said they are proud to be involved in the important task of making the national flag ahead of Independence Day. They are hopeful of receiving greater support from the government and administration in the future. They also expect that the initiative to involve local self-help groups in national flag production will be expanded further.
