Dharmanagar, Tripura, 1st of June, 2026 : A young man was detained by local businessmen in Panisagar market area of North Tripura on allegations of cheating people by falsely introducing himself as a serving jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF). He was later handed over to the police on Monday at around 11 a.m.
According to local traders, the accused had been moving around various areas, including Panisagar market, Chamtilla, and Bilthai, for nearly two years while claiming to be a BSF personnel. Taking advantage of this false identity, he allegedly borrowed money from shopkeepers, collected goods on credit, and obtained financial benefits from several people under various pretexts.

The accused has been identified as Uttam Chakma, a resident of Ujan Machmara in Unakoti district, according to preliminary information. Traders who claimed to have been cheated had been searching for him for a long time. On Monday, they reportedly identified and detained him before taking him to Panisagar Police Station. Subsequently, local businessmen submitted a written complaint against the accused at the police station.
Police have initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities are also examining whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged fraud and whether more complaints may emerge during the course of the investigation.
