Sonamura, Tripura, 31st of July, 2026 : According to report in February 2024, a kidnapping case was registered at Sonamura Police Station following allegations that the prime accused, with the assistance of his relatives, had forcibly abducted a minor girl from Sonamura Subdivision and taken her to Udaipur Subdivision.

Accordingly, a case was registered, and during the course of the investigation, the relatives of the prime accused were arrested. However, the main accused remained absconding.
On Thursday (30th July, 2026) the prime accused was arrested for his alleged involvement in the case and produced before the competent court. The court subsequently remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody, according to available information.
It is pertinent to mention that the prosecution has also sought the addition of provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to the case before the competent court. Authorities stated that anyone found involved in cases of abduction or child marriage, or those who facilitate or encourage child marriage, will also be brought under the ambit of these laws.
