8-Tonne Bridge Allegedly Carrying 15–16 Tonne Loads, Safety Concerns Mount On Sabroom–Baishnabpur Road.

Sabroom, Tripura, 28th of September, 2026 : Deteriorating Government-Built Road and Movement of Overloaded Vehicles Raise Safety Concerns on Sabroom–Baishnabpur Road; Allegations of 15–16 Tonne Goods Vehicles Crossing an 8-Tonne Bridge

The road and bridge were constructed using government funds. However, when overloaded vehicles operate on such infrastructure in violation of prescribed rules, concerns arise over whether crores of rupees spent on developmental projects will ultimately become a source of public hardship and safety risks.

Residents have alleged that heavy goods vehicles are regularly plying along the Sabroom–Baishnabpur road in Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura. According to locals, vehicles loaded with construction materials such as iron rods, cement, stones and other materials frequently use this road.

According to local residents, the Sabroom–Baishnabpur road and two bridges along the route are gradually deteriorating due to the regular movement of heavy goods vehicles. The iron bridge near Baishnabpur Market has a load-bearing capacity of 8 tonnes. However, allegations have surfaced that vehicles carrying loads far exceeding the prescribed limit are regularly crossing the bridge. It has also been alleged that some vehicles are carrying as much as 15 to 16 tonnes of goods while passing over the iron bridge.

According to local residents, the bridge collapsed last year allegedly due to the movement of heavily loaded vehicles carrying excessive quantities of stone. As a result, daily commuters using this route had to face considerable hardship for a prolonged period.

Locals have also expressed concern that if the movement of overloaded heavy vehicles continues in violation of the prescribed rules, a major accident could occur at any time. Questions have therefore been raised over the need for strict monitoring by the concerned departments, particularly when vehicles are allegedly carrying loads nearly twice the bridge’s designated capacity.

Questions are also being raised about who is permitting such heavily loaded vehicles to operate and how they are being allowed to cross the bridge. It now remains to be seen what steps the administration and concerned departments take regarding the allegations of overloaded vehicles plying on the Sabroom–Baishnabpur road.

At the same time, local residents have demanded that the actual load-bearing capacity of the bridges be verified and that authorities ensure strict enforcement of the prescribed regulations governing vehicular movement.
