Dharmanagar, Tripura, 29th of April 2026 : A government hospital—meant to be the last refuge for ordinary people in times of distress—has now come under scrutiny for allegedly turning into a platform for commercial promotion. What has surfaced at Dharmanagar District Hospital in North Tripura is not only inappropriate but deeply concerning, raising serious questions about administrative accountability.

According to allegations, a large advertisement board of a private multi-specialty nursing home was prominently displayed within the hospital area. The board promoted various services, including 24-hour emergency care, in an eye-catching manner. This has triggered a key question: how could a private entity carry out such aggressive promotion inside a government institution? Who granted permission for this?

A section of local residents believes this is not merely an “oversight” but could be a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of the public healthcare system. At a time when government hospitals are already struggling with issues like shortage of doctors, limited emergency services, and poor sanitation, the presence of such advertisements within the same premises appears to send a subtle yet powerful message—“Choose private over public.”More alarmingly, this has reportedly led to confusion among patients and their families. For economically weaker sections who rely heavily on government healthcare, such displays risk creating unnecessary doubt and mistrust, thereby undermining the very purpose of public health services.

Following the controversy, Medical Superintendent Bhaskar Das stated that he was unaware of the installation of the advertisement. He claimed that once the matter came to light, the board was immediately removed and a complaint was lodged against the private institution. However, the explanation has raised eyebrows—how could such a large structure be installed without the knowledge of the authorities?Concerned citizens have openly questioned whether influential groups might have facilitated this act. They are now demanding not just the removal of the advertisement, but a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure strict action.

This incident once again brings a critical issue into focus: is the public healthcare system gradually yielding to private interests, or is this simply a case of gross administrative negligence?

All eyes are now on the North Tripura District Health Department—will they take decisive action and set an example, or will this incident quietly fade away without accountability?
