Agartala, Tripura, 27th of June 2026 : With the initiative of Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department Government of Tripura organized Sahitya Samrat Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay birth anniversary ceremony at Muktadhara Auditorium, Agartala, Tripura on Friday (26th June, 2026).

In the presence of many distinguished dignitaries Hon’ble Industries and Commerce minister Santana Chakma was inaugurated the event.
The dignitaries paid floral tributes to the portrait of Sahitya Samrat Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay to mark his birth anniversary. Following the welcome address, a short documentary on the life and works of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was screened.
Addressing at the event Chief Guest, Minister Santana Chakma, said that generations of students have studied the life and works of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and learned how his writings awakened the spirit of nationalism during British rule. She remarked that despite being a distinguished scholar, he always believed in being an ideal human being. She encouraged young people to pursue education not only for employment but also to become responsible, compassionate, and morally upright citizens who contribute positively to society.

Speaking on the occasion, Dipak Majumder, Hon’ble Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and MLA, expressed pride that Vande Mataram is today celebrated and respected across the nation. He said that the song had united Indians during the freedom struggle against British rule and continues to symbolize patriotism and national unity. He also spoke about the life and contributions of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and appreciated the ICA Department for organizing the commemorative programme.
Welcoming the guests and participants, ICA Secretary Pradip Kumar Chakraborty highlighted the life, literary achievements, and enduring legacy of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. He informed that the birth anniversary was being observed across all districts of the state and that schools had also been instructed to commemorate the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Subrata Chakraborty spoke about the timeless relevance of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s writings. He noted that Vande Mataram, written nearly 150 years ago, became a symbol of India’s freedom moverment and continues to inspire generations. He also highlighted Bankim Chandra’s pioneering contribution to Bengali literature through his novels and said that works such as Devi Chaudhurani challenged social barriers, addressed prevailing social evils, and promoted the ideals of women’s empowerment and social reform. He urged everyone to embrace the positive values reflected in Bankim Chandra’s writings for the progress of society and the nation.
The programme also featured the prize distribution ceremony for the winners of the state-level essay writing competition conducted among school, college, and university students.

In the school category, the first prize was awarded to Sourabhi Das of Gandhigram Higher Secondary School, the second prize to Gitanjali Sharma of PM SHRI Karmini Kumar Singh Memorial School, and the third prize to Ankita Das of DC Para Hemanta Smriti Vidyalaya.
In the college category, the first prize was awarded to Shilpa Datta of Rabindranath Thakur Mahavidyalaya, the second prize to Biplab Das of Government Degree College, Dharmanagar, and the third prize to Mujibur Rahman of Ramthakur College.
In University level, the first prize was awarded to Souyajyoti Roy of MBB University, while Aditi Rani Das and Goutam Das of Tripura University secured the second and third prizes respectively. The awards were presented by the dignitaries.

Amidst the others distinguished dignitaries there were MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, Vice-Chairman of the State Cultural Advisory Committee Subrata Chakraborty, Secretary of the ICA Department Pradip Kumar Chakraborty and Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Bimbisar Bhattacharjee and many others distinguished dignitaries were present at the event.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, paying fitting tribute to the life, literary excellence, and enduring legacy of Sahitya Samrat Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
