Civic Services In Sabroom Nagar Panchayat Remain In A State Of Decline.

Sabroom, Tripura, 28th of July, 2026 : After the introduction of the three-tier Panchayati Raj system in 1995, Nagar Panchayats were established.Since its establishment, Sabroom Nagar Panchayat was governed by the Left Front government until 2018.

However, even during the Left regime, the condition of the town remained very poor, according to local residents.People of the town have now started alleging that they have witnessed what the “Ram devotees” have done in the name of development and will judge their performance accordingly. They further claim that even after replacing the Left government in 2018 and bringing in a government supported by the Ram ideology), the common people of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat continue to face the same problems and remain in a difficult situation.

According to allegations, the condition of roads across Sabroom Nagar Panchayat has deteriorated to a level worse than “hellish roads.” Civic services are said to be almost non-existent.

Despite the presence of concrete drains on both sides of the roads, there is reportedly no proper system for water drainage. Dense overgrown vegetation along the roadside is not only making the drains and roads unhygienic but has also created a breeding ground for snakes and poisonous insects, with locals sarcastically saying it seems like a “grand festival for pests” is being held there.

Additionally, during the monsoon season or even after light rainfall, the entire sewerage system reportedly overflows onto the roads, with sewage, human waste, and other contaminated materials flowing openly in public areas.

Not only this, even a few drops of rain are said to cause knee-deep waterlogging on the road from Anandapara near the boundary of Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital towards Thakur Palli. Residents of the town are facing severe difficulties, while civic services continue to deteriorate and remain far below expectations.

Outside the Nagar Panchayat area, in the remote parts of Sabroom subdivision, many tribal and indigenous students studying from Class VI to higher secondary levels are reportedly facing severe difficulties while pursuing their education.

The main concern is that after evening, many roads in the densely populated wards of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat remain engulfed in darkness. Although electric poles are installed on both sides of the roads, streetlights are reportedly not functioning or are not seen illuminated. Due to this, residents as well as students have to travel after sunset amid fear and uncertainty, often using mobile phone lights for visibility.

The TUEP Work, which was earlier considered an alternative to MGNREGA and is now being implemented under the Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (VBRY), is also reportedly not providing adequate employment opportunities in the urban area. Despite the Prime Minister’s statement that work opportunities in expanded urban areas would be provided at the same level as rural areas, locals allege that Sabroom Nagar Panchayat is not receiving work opportunities accordingly.

Residents further alleged that in the Sabroom Nagar Panchayat area, employment under the scheme is provided for only around 12 days a year, and that too in just two phases.

Residents of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat allege that if the Nagar administration had continued TUEP work every month, the roadsides would not have been covered with such heavy vegetation, and the concrete drains along both sides of the roads would not have become filled with overgrown weeds.

Locals say, “There is a saying — mosquitoes at night and snakes during the day. But in Sabroom Nagar area, the situation has turned into ‘mosquitoes during the day and snakes at night.’” They claim that due to the lack of proper spraying of DDT powder and mosquito-control measures in the concrete drains, mosquito menace has increased significantly, especially during morning and evening hours.

Meanwhile, residents allege that the drinking water supply system has become a “joke,” as no one knows the exact time when water will be supplied. Despite these issues, people are required to pay various taxes and charges to the Nagar administration. Locals sarcastically remarked that “there seems to be no tax exemption even after death.” Overall, residents allege that civic services in Sabroom Nagar Panchayat have turned into a “hell-like situation.” They question why the Nagar administration is prompt in collecting taxes from citizens but is unable to provide proper civic facilities in return. The issue has raised concerns among the people, with many questioning the lack of effective urban management and basic services despite regular tax collection from residents.
