Agriculture Is The Future Of Food Security, Environmental Protection And Rural Economic Development: Agriculture Minister.

Agartala, Tripura, 13th of September, 2026 : With the initiative of Tripura Agriculture College celebration ceremony of 20th Foundation Day and 16th Graduation Day-2026 organized at college campus, Lembucherra, Agartala, Tripura on Saturday (12th September, 2026).

Studying agriculture means taking responsibility for ensuring food security for the people. Creating an educated and skilled workforce in the agricultural sector will play an important role in increasing food production, raising farmers’, incomes and strengthening the rural economy, said Hon’ble Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath. He was speaking after inaugurating the 20th Foundation Day and 16th Graduation Day-2026 of Tripura Agriculture College at the college auditorium in Lembucherra.

The Agriculture Minister said the day was not merely a celebration of the institution’s foundation day, but also an occasion to celebrate 20 years of knowledge, research, hard work, dreams and commitment towards agriculture. Agriculture is not just a profession but the foundation of civilisation, he said. He observed that information technology, artificial intelligence (Al), industries and space science represent the future. At the same time, agriculture is also our future as it ensures food security, protects the environment and contributes to the development of the rural economy. The Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts are being made to transform India into the food basket of the world. India’s greatest strength is its vast human resources, and there is immense scope to utilise this manpower to further strengthen agriculture and the agriculture-based economy. Ratan Lal Nath said Tripura Agriculture College began its journey in 2007 with only 19 students. Today, the institution has developed into an established centre of education and research. He attributed this achievement to the strength of the institution, the dedication of its teachers and the hard work of its students.

Highlighting the occasion, Agriculture Minister remarked that compared to 2014, the scope of education, research, training and academic exposure at Tripura Agriculture College has expanded significantly. The college currently offers B.Sc. Agriculture (Honours) as well as M.Sc. Agriculture programmes. The Minister said the agriculture sector offers significant opportunities for employment and career growth. Over the past few years, the state government has recruited 252 Agriculture Officers and 409 Agriculture Assistants under the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department. This has created employment opportunities for educated youth while also strengthening agricultural infrastructure.

Among others, the programme was addressed by Dean of Tripura Fisheries College Professor Arun Bhai Patel, Secretary of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Apurba Roy, Additional Finance Secretary Dr. Akinchan Sarkar, Director of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Dr. P. B. Jamatia and Registrar of Tripura University Professor Samir Kumar Seal. Principal of Tripura Agriculture College, Professor Dr. Debashis Sen, delivered the welcome address, while Organising Secretary Dr. E. Reang delivered the vote of thanks.

During the programme, selected Agriculture Officers of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department were felicitated. B.Sc. (Honours) Agriculture degrees were also conferred upon graduating students.
