Sabroom, South Tripura, 13th of June, 2026 : An alleged case of loan repayment misappropriation has surfaced at the Sabroom branch of Village Microfinance Company, raising concerns among local borrowers. Jahar Lal Das, a financially struggling resident of Thaibong Gram Panchayat under Satchand R.D. Block, Sabroom, South Tripura district in Tripura, claims to have taken a ₹90,000 loan from the institution around eighteen months ago.

According to Jahar Lal Das, he regularly paid the monthly installment of ₹4,656 and handed the cash directly to the branch manager, Abhijit Sarkar, who is still serving in the same position. He alleged that the branch manager entered the amount in the loan passbook, signed it, and recorded the date as proof of payment. Das further stated that on two occasions, the installment amounts were transferred through Google Pay to the branch manager, Abhijit Sarkar.

Jahar Lal Das’s daughter is currently studying in the third year of college in Agartala. Hoping to arrange funds for her higher education, the financially struggling Das had recently held nearly final discussions with Bandhan Bank for a loan of ₹2 lakh.

According to Das, bank officials declined to process the proposed loan after finding issues with his credit profile. Shocked by the development, he maintained that he had repaid in full the ₹90,000 loan obtained from Village Microfinance and could not understand why his credit record had been negatively affected.

Jahar Lal Das and his wife subsequently went to the Sabroom branch of Village Microfinance to inquire about the issue affecting his creditworthiness. According to Das, the branch manager initially denied responsibility but later admitted to the discrepancy after discussions at the office.

According to Das, Branch Manager Abhijit Sarkar sought time to resolve the issue and requested that it not be made public. He alleged that the manager assured him that the loan records would be corrected within days and that the adverse credit report would be cleared.

When contacted by this reporter for his response to the allegations, Abhijit Sarkar did not provide any statement on camera.

Sources connected to the Sabroom branch alleged that the matter may involve more than one customer and that other borrowers could have experienced similar problems with their loan records. At present, these allegations remain unconfirmed, and no official statement has been issued by the company.
