Khowai, Tripura, 16th of September, 2026 : The present State Government is highly committed to the development of sports, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma said on Tuesday (15th September, 2026). He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day state-level School Sports Under-17 Girls’ Football Competition at the Khowai Government Higher Secondary School ground. The minister said several initiatives have already been taken to improve sports infrastructure in the state. He also said that the state government is pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. “If the youth are not guided in the right direction, it will have a negative impact on society as a whole,” he said.

Addressing on the occasion, MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury said sports not only help keep the body and mind healthy but also play an important role in building a healthy society. Chief Whip of the State Legislative Assembly Kalyani Saha Roy said all stakeholders associated with sports must come forward to ensure that the positive impact of the steps taken by the state government for sports development is reflected on the playing fields.

District Sports Officer Dibakar Debnath delivered the welcome address. Khowai Zilla Parishad Standing Committee Chairman Anukul Das, Khowai Football Association President Samir Kumar Das and others were present as guests. Sportsperson Bishnupada Chakraborty presided over the programme. A total of nine teams are participating in the football competition.
