Assembly Session 2025 : Agartala, Tripura, 15th of January, 2025 : The State Government has taken up a project to conduct language mapping of teachers and students of all schools in the state. The main objective of this mapping is to identify the correct language profile of the mother tongue of teachers and students in the state.

This will help in identifying the exact status of students enrolled in schools whose mother tongue is Kokborok and the exact picture of teachers who know Kokborok language in those schools. The Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department will soon complete the work of this project. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said this in response to the public interest notice brought by MLA Bishwajit Kalai in the assembly session today (15th January, 2024).
The notice that caught the attention of MLA Biswajit Kalai was ‘Regarding the steps taken by the state government for the development of Kokborok language’. In this regard, the Chief Minister said in the Assembly that Kokborok is taught as one of the subjects in 1,163 schools from class 1 to 5, 133 schools from class 6 to 8, 115 schools in class 9 and 10, and 65 schools in class 11 and 12.
The Chief minister said that from the 2024-25 academic year, Kokborok language has been introduced as a subject in class I in an additional 20 schools. After the establishment of the Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department in 2012, this department started printing Kokborok textbooks for classes 9 to 12. Since the establishment of this department, the Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department has been distributing textbooks for classes 9 to 12 free of cost to schools.
Currently, Kokborok textbooks are being prepared for classes I to VIII and SCERT Kokborok textbooks are being printed and distributed to schools free of cost. A total of 59 books in Kokborok literature have been published by the Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department. 26 books have been published from 2018 to 2024. 16 workshops, seminars, teacher training and educational programs on Kokborak language have been organized from 2018 to 2024. A three-day workshop was organized from July 10-12 last year by the Kokborak and Other Minority Languages Department to upgrade the Kokborak dialect vocabulary/dictionary.
An online Kokborok learning course has already been launched for government employees. Moreover, the Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department is conducting Kokborok learning courses for professionals working at Umakanta Academy. The Chief Minister said that every year on January 19, a procession is organized by school and college students, NGOs and various social organizations to commemorate Kokborok Day.

Since 2020, the Kokborok Day is being celebrated in all the subdivisions of the state. Kokborok Day is celebrated for a week in all the schools, colleges and universities of the state. Last year, at the 46th Kokborok Day celebration, 5 Kokborok teachers were honored for their contribution to teaching in Kokborok language and the development of Kokborok language.
