Sabroom, Tripura, 10th of August, 2026 : In Ward No. 2 of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat under Sabroom Sub-Division, Sukanta Shishu Park, located premises to the Damdama fish, meat and vegetable market along National Highway No. 8 connecting Sabroom and Agartala, has been reduced to ruins due to the negligence of the Nagar Panchayat authorities. The park is situated within a stone’s throw of the SDM Court and SDM Office, in the sensitive Office Tilla area.
Leaders of the ruling party from the 40-Sabroom Assembly constituency often claim loudly at street-corner meetings and public gatherings that under the government, development is reaching every corner of the state. However, local residents allege that seven to eight years ago, the infrastructure and overall appearance of this park were remarkably beautiful and well-maintained, resembling a garden of exceptional beauty.

After the government came to power in the state in 2018, the park gradually fell into ruins due to a lack of proper maintenance by the municipal authorities. At present, various recreational and play equipment for children, including swings, slides, and merry-go-rounds, have rusted and broken down inside the park. Even the statue of poet Sukanta Bhattacharjee located within the park has reportedly been left neglected.
Not only that, the park is currently covered with overgrown vegetation and piles of garbage. Local residents also allege that the park has been deteriorating for years, yet the authorities have seemingly failed to take notice. They questioned whether the ruling party leaders who travel along this road every day have ever noticed the condition of the park, or whether they have simply overlooked it amid their claims of development. Residents also expressed concern that, with Sukanta Shishu Park falling into disrepair, young children in the urban area are losing a safe space for recreation and outdoor activities. As a result, many children are increasingly turning to smartphones at home, raising concerns about the potential impact on their overall development and future well-being.
