Agartala, Tripura, 11th of August 2025 : Tripura University’s Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) and the State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (SIPARD) jointly celebrated International Tribal Day by hosting a one-day seminar on “Role of Village Committees in Tribal Development in Tripura” at the university’s Conference Hall.

The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Tripura University, Prof. Ganga Prasad Prosain, who in his presidential address shed light on the diverse forms of village committees across the North Eastern states, underlining their importance in tribal governance. He also addressed the pressing challenges in tribal development and suggested practical solutions to overcome them.

Dr. Rajesh Chatterjee, Coordinator of CSSEIP, delivered the welcome address, emphasising the academic importance of examining grassroots institutions in driving tribal development. Shri R. K. Noatia, former Director of Rural Development (Panchayat) Department and former Additional CEO of TTAADC, highlighted the role of the council and village committees in strengthening the socio-economic fabric of tribal communities. Dr. Nani Gopal Debnath provided an analytical overview of the socio-economic conditions of tribal populations in India and Tripura.

The seminar also saw research scholars present thematic papers, while students from various departments attended in traditional ethnic attire, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the occasion. The event was coordinated by Dr. Rajib Malakar, Assistant Professor–Senior Grade, SIPARD, who in his concluding remarks expressed heartfelt thanks to Tripura University for partnering with SIPARD in organising the seminar. The programme was funded by SIPARD.
