Agartala, Tripura, 24th of May 2026. The Diocese of Agartala marked a historic milestone with the grand celebration of the Pearl Jubilee of the Diocese and the Episcopal Ordination Jubilee of its first Bishop, Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, on May 23 and 24, 2026. The two-day celebration brought together bishops, priests, religious, and thousands of faithful from across Tripura and beyond in a spirit of thanksgiving, faith, and communion.

The jubilee celebration commemorated thirty years since the erection of the Diocese of Agartala on Pentecost Sunday, May 26, 1996, and thirty years of episcopal ministry of Bishop Lumen Monteiro, CSC, who has led the Diocese since its inception. The celebrations began on Saturday, May 23, with a solemn inaugural gathering attended by Archbishops, Bishops, Provincial Superiors, priests, religious men and women, and representatives from all the thirty parishes of the Diocese.

Cultural programmes and moments of gratitude highlighted the evening as the faithful reflected on the remarkable journey of the local Church over the past three decades. The solemn Jubilee Eucharistic Celebration was held on Sunday, May 24, coinciding with the feast of Pentecost. A large number of clergy, religious, and lay faithful gathered to participate in the thanksgiving Mass. The celebration witnessed the presence of several dignitaries including Archbishops, Bishops from different dioceses, the Provincials and family members of Bishop Lumen Monteiro.
Speaking on the occasion, Church leaders recalled the humble beginnings of the Diocese with just nine parishes and its growth into a vibrant local Church with thirty parishes spread across Tripura. The Diocese today stands as a testimony to decades of missionary commitment, pastoral service, and educational initiatives carried out in across Tripura. Special tribute was paid to Bishop Lumen Monteiro for his dedicated leadership and missionary zeal.

Over the past thirty years, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening parish communities, establishing schools and institutions, and nurturing the faith life of the people. His contribution to the wider Church through health ministry, and Caritas India was also gratefully acknowledged. The jubilee celebrations became an occasion not only to remember the rich history of the Diocese but also to renew the commitment of the people towards the mission of the Church in Tripura. The gathering concluded with prayers of thanksgiving and hope as the Diocese looks forward to continuing its journey of faith and service in the years ahead.
