Death Trap In Padmabil Behind The Claims Of Development! Hundreds Of Students Cross A Dangerous Bridge To Reach School.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 26th of June 2026 : Despite repeated claims and publicity surrounding development initiatives, residents of large areas under North Padmabil and South Padmabil Gram Panchayats in the Panisagar Assembly Constituency of North Tripura continue to suffer from severe communication and transportation problems. The only road connecting Jalabazar and Borobazar has remained in a dilapidated condition for years.

Adding to the hardship, the old steel bridge that serves as the sole means of crossing for local residents has become extremely unsafe and is now widely regarded as a “death trap.”According to local sources, thousands of people from nearly 450 families living in Wards 1, 2, 3, and 4 of North and South Padmabil depend on this road and bridge for their daily commute. However, years of neglect have left the road riddled with large potholes, while several parts of the bridge have deteriorated significantly. As a result, residents are forced to risk their lives every day while travelling.

Students are among the worst affected. More than 200 schoolchildren cross the hazardous bridge daily to attend classes. Due to the bridge’s fragile condition, many parents are afraid to let their children cross alone and are compelled to personally escort them to school.Healthcare access has also become a major concern. Residents allege that ambulances cannot reach the area when pregnant women or critically ill patients require urgent medical attention. Consequently, patients often have to be carried manually or transported through makeshift arrangements across the dangerous bridge before they can reach a healthcare facility. This situation poses a serious risk of accidents and even loss of life.Local residents claim that they have repeatedly appealed to the administration and elected representatives for the repair of the road and bridge, but no effective action has been taken so far.

During the monsoon season, muddy conditions, waterlogging, and the damaged road further worsen the suffering of the people.Residents question that if the benefits of development have truly reached remote areas, why are hundreds of people in North and South Padmabil still deprived of a safe and reliable transportation network?Their demand is clear: the immediate and comprehensive repair of the Jalabazar–Borobazar road and the construction of a modern, permanent bridge to replace the unsafe steel structure. They stress that prompt and effective intervention by the authorities is needed now—before a major accident occurs, not after.
