Jirania Law College Organises Seminar On Constitutional And Legal Safeguards For Women’s Rights.

Agartala, Tripura, 29th of June 2026 : Jirania Law College located at Mohanpur under West Tripura district on Sunday (28th June, 2026) organized a seminar on “Protection of Women’s Rights in India: The Constitutional, Legal and Social Perspective” at its seminar hall, where speakers discussed constitutional provisions, legal safeguards and social measures aimed at protecting women’s rights in the country.

The programme was attended by Dr Miltan Kumar Acharjee, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Tripura Government Law College, as the chief guest.

Principal Dr Raj Kumar Srivastava inaugurated the programme by reading out a message from the college secretary, Dr Bishnu Pada Das, and delivered the welcome address.

In his address, Dr Acharjee spoke on the constitutional framework protecting women’s rights and highlighted provisions aimed at ensuring equality, dignity and social justice. Referring to Article 15(3), he said, “The Constitution empowers the state to make special provisions for women, while Article 39 provides for equal pay for equal work and Article 42 calls for just and humane conditions of work along with maternity relief.”

He also referred to Article 21 relating to the right to life and dignity and discussed legal safeguards available to women under various statutes. These included laws relating to sexual harassment at the workplace, domestic violence, dowry prohibition, maternity benefits, medical termination of pregnancy, maintenance rights and inheritance rights under the amended Hindu Succession Act, 2005.

Dr Acharjee also highlighted the role of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Acts in providing reservation for women in panchayats and local bodies. Stressing the importance of legal awareness, he said constitutional rights must be supported by effective implementation of laws and greater public awareness. He also touched upon the topic of Nari Shakti Adhiniyam Bill which promises reservations for women in parliament and state legislative assemblies across the country.

Associate Professors Dr D.P. Gautam and Dr Sushil Kumar also addressed the seminar and spoke on issues relating to women’s legal rights and social protection.

Assistant Professors Maryam Chakraborty also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the need for strengthening legal awareness and ensuring effective implementation of laws enacted for the protection of women.

The seminar concluded with an interactive session in which participants discussed constitutional rights, legal remedies and contemporary challenges relating to women’s empowerment and protection.

Students of the college also delivered their views on the statutory and constitutional safeguards available to women.

Librarian of the college Krishna Deb also delivered a short speech at the conclusion of the event. Assistant Professor Suparna Debnath quoted the vote of thanks.
