Agartala, Tripura, 19th of December 2025 : In an era of rapid globalization, the preservation of indigenous linguistic roots has become a national priority. To address this, Ramthakur College, Agartala, in collaboration with Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Tripura Prant, hosted a lecture titled “The Importance of Indian Languages” at the college auditorium today.

The event was organized to honor ‘Indian Languages Day’, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the legendary Tamil poet and national icon, Subramania Bharati. The seminar aimed to sensitize the youth about the deep-rooted connection between language, identity, and the Indian knowledge tradition. The atmosphere was immediately transformed by the students’ rendition of a welcome song, which celebrated the linguistic harmony of India.
Dr. Papri Dasgupta, Principal of Ramthakur College and Chairperson of the event, delivered a moving presidential address. “Language is much more than a tool for communication,” she remarked. “It is the garment of thought and the attire of culture. It does not divide us; it acts as a bridge for coordination and collective history.” She urged students to embrace their mother tongues with pride, describing language as an “ocean of human sensations.” Adding to this, Dr. Niranjan Das, Secretary of the Teachers’ Council, highlighted the shared heritage of Hindi and Bengali, noting that respecting every language that arises from the heart is the true essence of being an Indian.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Kali Charan Jha, Associate Professor, Tripura University, provided a profound analysis of the linguistic landscape of Northeast India. He highlighted that: Linguistic Preservation: There are currently 43 languages and dialects in the Northeast that require active conservation efforts. Cultural Extinction: Dr. Jha warned that the death of a language is not an isolated event; it marks the permanent loss of centuries of civilization and unique Indian wisdom. NEP 2020: He linked the empowerment of Indian languages directly to the National Education Policy 2020, which advocates for education in the mother tongue to ensure cognitive and cultural development.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Pauly Bhowmik (HOD, Hindi Department), who praised the students for their enthusiastic participation.
The proceedings were seamlessly managed by Mr. Akashbaran Debnath. With over ninety students and faculty members in attendance, the lecture served as a powerful reminder that to strengthen India, one must first strengthen the languages that define its soul.
