New Delhi, 8th of March 2024 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the CAA, which was enacted in 2019, will be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections this year after issuing the rules in this regard.
The CAA, which became law in December 2019, aims to provide citizenship to persecuted refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Specifically, it seeks to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955 to grant eligibility for Indian citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian illegal migrants from these countries.
The central government could notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) any time before the Model Code of Conduct is implemented ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, sources told.
